What are Black Diamonds?

A black diamond usually receives its color from either radiation or chemical treatments. Under normal lighting conditions the color enhanced "black" diamond looks black, but it is actually a very dark green. The very dark green color that is seen is never seen in natural diamonds. It occurs only as a result of radiation treatment.

Are there Black Diamonds that are untreated and natural?

Yes! A natural black diamond has color that is the result of numerous inclusions, mostly graphite. Due to the high amount of these dark inclusions, natural black diamonds are generally opaque.

The Black Star of Africa and the Black Orfloff are examples of famous, natural black diamonds.

So, natural or enhanced? Are there other options for Black Diamonds?

Many people want natural gems and diamonds. An enhanced black diamond is a natural diamond that is treated to obtain uniform color. It is typically much better quality than a "natural" black diamond due to the nature of its inclusions. There is also another option: cultured black diamonds.
